Breeding Plan for 2024

First: God is in control of all pairings, and this plan is subject to His will and, therefore, may change over time. Our goal this year was to have kids born in mid-February to late March, 2024. By God’s grace, all does were serviced by 11/1, for Feb/March due dates. Of course, we don’t know if all will settle, but all were serviced, and we are thankful and excited about our pairs!

To learn how to be added to our Interest List, please click HERE.

All kids will be eligible for registry with MDGA and TMGR. All kids are priced after birth, but our breeding stock ranges from $400-$600. Wethers will be $150. In mid-to-late spring, we will also be selling some of our adult does.

The entire herd is tested yearly for diseases. We tested clean in 2023 for Johnes, CL, and CAE.

We reserve the right to retain any kids born on our farm. Your indicated interest in any pairing does not guarantee any purchase of kids born. We use our Interest List to pair buyers and animals; we do not promise to go in strict order, but given two potentially good fits, the one who contacted us earlier gets first pick.

We choose breeding pairs not according to generation numbers but with an eye toward improving our animals’ conformation and udder production. If you are hesitant to buy lower generation minis, please read THIS ARTICLE on how to prefer quality animals over generation labels.

Senior Does

JC’s Bluebelle 3*P and Green Gables AC Amazing Asteroid *B

Bluebelle had a lovely, capacious, highly productive first freshening udder, and her second and third freshening udders was even better, with a lovely, well-blended forudder that I definitely want reproduced. She easily earned her 305-day production star in 2021. She is a gorgeous chocolate roan with strong breed character.  We retained her daughter, Storybook’s Briar Rose, who had a beautiful FF udder in 2022, and an even stronger one is 2023. We have purchased her grand-daughter, JC’s Biscotti. We also have Bluebelle’s daughters Storybook’s Sweet Lilac (polled) and Storybook’s Mayflower (from 2021 season), who will both be FFs this year. Amazing Asteroid (also small) is relatively new to us, but his milk heritage is, well, amazing! In 2020, Mazy’s dam Eclipse placed twice on the Top 10 305-Day List: #3 for milk volume and #5 for total butterfat. She earned her milk star in both volume and butterfat. In 2021, Eclipse peaked on test at 14#. Add to these, Mazy has a long, level topline and great breed character with a super nose and long ears, and we are very excited to see what his kids will be like! Chocolate kids and roaning are possible and bucklings will be *B. UPDATE: They connected on October 26; unconfirmed due date is 3/24/24. Bluebelle was early, in two ways: early in the morning, delivering triplets (2 b/1d) between 12:30-1:00 AM, and also three days early, on 3/20.

Wonderful Farm SG Royal Candy *P and Storybook’s Buckeye *B

Candy came to us by way of Green Gables farm in 2021, where Eliya Elmquist used her extensively, retaining three daughters and a son as a herdsire. Candy is polled and has great milk creds behind her. One of her best features is her smooth fore udder. Buckeye is the product of one of our favorite combinations: Storybook’s Bluebelle 3*P and Green Gables E Asher *B. His dam’s udder is socked on tight and has given copious milk production, also with a very nice fore udder. One of our goals is to cement this great fore udder trait. Buckeye has long ears and great breed character. Polling is possible. Kids will be F2, and bucklings will be *B. UPDATE: They connected on October 8; unconfirmed due date is 3/6. Candy delivered buck/doe twins on 3/11. The boy seems to be polled and will be available; the doeling will be retained.

Storybook’s Briar Rose and Mosaic’s Mahogany Obsidian *B

Rosie is JC’s Bluebelle 3*P‘s daughter, by Green Gables E Asher *B. Rosie is petite, and chocolate colored. Her dam Bluebelle’s udder is one of the top producers in our barn and has a very lovely teat placements and fore udder as well. Rosie’s FF udder was gorgeous, with perfect teat placement and lovely attachments. It only improved in 2023! We were not milk testing in 2023, but we plan to do so in 2024, and look to see her gain her milk star. Sid is still new to us this year. Sid and Rosie produced lovely triplets in 2023 (see them here) and we retained their daughter (Storybook’s Primrose), so we are repeating the pairing. Sid has a strong milk heritage in BlackBerry lines, notably Blackberry’s Snowflake Obsidian *P and Blackberry’s Moon Man +*B. In his own right, Sid is a wide, long, hefty (but still small!) boy, who should add bone and spring of rib to kids, along with beautiful breed character and a great topline. Black or chocolate kids are possible. Kids will be F6. UPDATE: They connected on 11/1; unconfirmed due date is 3/30/24. Unfortunately, Rosie miscarried two bucklings on 2/26/24 for no apparent reason.

JC’s Penelope and Storybook’s Buckeye *B

JC’s Penny was born in March of 2020, and freshened in January of 2022 for the first time with triplets (one of whom is our Biscotti) and gave us triplets again in 2023. Penny has a well sprung barrel and lovely breed character. She has a great brisket, nice rear-leg angularity, and her udder is high and tight. She was not on milk test in 2023, but we are hoping that she earns her star in 2024. Buckeye is the product of one of our favorite combinations: Storybook’s Bluebelle 3*P and Green Gables E Asher *B. His full brother (different litter) combined with Penny in 2020 to give us Biscotti, who will be a FF this year. His dam’s udder is socked on tight and has given copious milk production, also with a very nice fore udder. He has long ears and great breed character. Black or chocolate kids are possible. Kids will be F5. UPDATES: They connected on September 11; our first to be bred this season. Unconfirmed due date was 2/8/24. Penny kidded flawlessly, at about noon, on a beautiful sunny day–50°! Girl/Boy twins. Boy will definitely be available; the doeling will be retained.

Storybook’s Doux Champagne and Green Gables AC Amazing Asteroid *B

Sweet Champagne, how I love her! She’s out of Udderly Precious Mimz the Word *P (an MDGA top 10 doe in both milk pounds and butter fat pounds) by Green Gables E Asher *B, whom we lost in 2022 to meningeal worm. I was super excited about this doe’s first freshening, and her udder was fabulous: high, tight, and productive! She led the barn in milk production among our first fresheners in 2023, so we are confident that she can earn her milk star in 2024. Both of her 2023 kids were moonspotted (see her page), though we cannot find out where she’s hiding hers! We are excited to put her on milk test in 2024. Amazing Asteroid is relatively new to us, but his milk heritage is, well, amazing! In 2020, Mazy’s dam Eclipse placed twice on the MDGA Top 10 305-Day List: #3 for milk volume and #5 for total butterfat. She earned her milk star in both volume and butterfat. In 2021, Eclipse peaked on test at 14#. Add to these, Mazy has a long, level topline and great breed character with a super nose and long ears, and we are very excited to see what his kids will be like! Moonspots are possible. Kids will be F7. Update: They connected on October 12; unconfirmed due date is 3/10/24. She delivered triplets: 2 doelings and a buckling on her due date. One doeling will be retained.

JC’s Snowdrop 3*P and Mosaic’s Mahogany Obsidian *B

JC’s Snowdrop 3*P is one of our best milkers. She is a sweet girl, with lovely moonspots. She has given us all boys except for her wonderful daughter, Tiger Lily (below). This will be her last season with us, and we are hoping for one more daughter! Sid is still new to us, but we love his milky genes from BlackBerry lines, notably Blackberry’s Snowflake Obsidian *P and Blackberry’s Moon Man +*B. In his own right, Sid is a wide, long, hefty (but still small!) boy, who should add bone and spring of rib to kids, along with beautiful breed character and a great topline. Black or chocolate kids are possible, as well as moonspots. Kids will be F5; bucklings will be *B. UPDATE: They connected on October 6; unconfirmed due date is 3/4/24. Snowdrop delivered QUADS (3 B/1D) on 3/3. The doeling will be retained; the boys are available. They are *B.

Storybook’s Tiger Lily and Mosaic’s Mahogany Obsidian *B

Tiger Lily is the only daughter of her dam, JC’s Snowdrop 3*P, after three seasons. Snowdrop is highly productive for milk. Her sire is Green Gables E Asher *B. So, her milk genes are strong. She is a sweet girl, with lovely moonspots. Her FF udder was so wonderful that we retained both of her 2023 boy/girl twins. We are excited to put her on milk test in 2024. Kids will be F6. UPDATE: They connected on October 29; unconfirmed due date is 3/27/24. She delivered on 3/25: buckling/doeling twins. Girl will be retained; boy will be available.

Storybook’s Annette and Mosaic’s Mahogany Obsidian *B

This is Storybook’s Annette. She is a full sister to Storybook’s Prince Valiant, and the daughter of Ginger Top Farm’s Giselle *P. She had a gorgeous FF udder in 2023: high and tight with great teat placement. Her topline and femine lines are beautiful! (We retained her doeling by Blue Moon this year, Storybook’s Suzette.) We are excited to put Annette on milk test in 2024. Kids will be F3. UPDATE: They connected on October 31; unconfirmed due date is 3/29/24. Annette easily delivered a beautiful buckskin doeling on 3/28.

Storybook’s Glimmer and Green Gables Amazing Asteroid *B

Storybook’s Glimmer is out of Storybook’s Twinkle by Joyous Farm’s Le Tigre. Glimmer is a second freshener this year. She had a nice high, tight udder as a FF, but had a prolapsed cervix in the weeks before delivering twin bucklings. We are breeding her again to see if that was a fluke or a habit. One of her great strengths is her long, level topline. We also are eager to see how her udder develops, since her milk heritage is strong. Add to these, Mazy has a long, level topline and truly great breed character with a super nose and long ears, and we are very excited to see what his kids will be like! Kids will be F3. UPDATE: They connected on October 23; unconfirmed due date is 3/21/24. Glimmer delivered twins one day early, on 3/20.

Gingertop Farm Giselle *P and either Amazing Asteroid *B or Mahogany Obsidian *B

Giselle is a powerhouse milker, but we had planned to retire her this year. However, she came into heat while we were away for the day, and jumped the fence to frolic with both Mazy and Sid. We will have to do DNA testing on her kids to determine parentage but, either way, any bucklings will be *B! Mazy is relatively new to us, but his milk heritage is, well, amazing! In 2020, Mazy’s dam Eclipse placed twice on the MDGA Top 10 305-Day List: #3 for milk volume and #5 for total butterfat. She earned her milk star in both volume and butterfat. In 2021, Eclipse peaked on test at 14#. Add to these, Mazy has a long, level topline and truly great breed character with a super nose and long ears, and we are very excited to see what his kids will be like! Sid is also still new to us, but we love his milky genes from BlackBerry lines, notably Blackberry’s Snowflake Obsidian *P and Blackberry’s Moon Man +*B. In his own right, Sid is a wide, long, hefty (but still small!) boy, who should add bone and spring of rib to kids, along with beautiful breed character and a great topline. Chocolate or black kids, and moonspots are possible. Kids will be F2. UPDATE: One or both of these boys connected with Giselle on October 26; unconfirmed due date is 3/24/24. Giselle delivered adorable twin doelings on 3/23. One will be retained; one may be available.

Storybook’s Marguerite and Green Gables AC Amazing Asteroid *B

Marguerite is a lovely young doe, blue eyed and polled. She’s got nice conformation. Her first freshening was not impressive. She rejected her one kid, and her udder (while well shaped) was not highly productive. We’re excited to look for improvement on her second freshening! Amazing Asteroid is relatively new to us, but his milk heritage is, well, amazing! In 2020, Mazy’s dam Eclipse placed twice on the Top 10 305-Day List: #3 for milk volume and #5 for total butterfat. She earned her milk star in both volume and butterfat. In 2021, Eclipse peaked on test at 14#. Add to these, Mazy has a long, level topline and great breed character with a super nose and long ears. We expect wonderful breed character from this pairing. Polled, blue-eyed, and roaned kids are possible; long ears are a certainty. Kids will be F4. UPDATE: They connected on October 29; unconfirmed due date is 3/27/24. Marguerite delivered a single, blue-eyed, polled doeling on 3/28.

First Fresheners in 2024

JC’s Biscotti and Green Gables AC Amazing Asteroid *

I’m very excited about this pairing. Biscotti comes to us from outstanding milk lines that combine JC and Storybook animals. (Read more on this here.) I love Biscotti’s smaller size and feisty personality. We’ll be hoping that both she and her dam (JC’s Penelope) get their milk stars in 2024. Kids will be F6. UPDATES: They connected on October 7; unconfirmed due date is 3/5. Biscotting flawlessly delivered two kids: buck/doe twins on 3/2/24. The doeling will be retained; the buckling is available.

Storybook’s Caramel Macchiato and Mosaic’s Mahogany Obsidian *B

Cara is a pretty girl! Blue eyed and moonspotted, with great conformation–what’s not to like? She is out of Storybook’s Ambrosia by Blackberry’s BQ Once in a Blue Moon, so there’s lots of milk in her pedigree. We are excited to be putting Cara on milk test in 2024. Blue eyed kids are possible, as are chocolate or black kids, and moonspots. Kids will be F3. UPDATE: They re-connected on November 16; unconfirmed due date is now 4/14/24. But, it seems now that she did not take.

Mosaic’s Tiny Dancer and Mosaic’s Mahogany Obsidian *B

Dancer is from excellent milking lines, combining Blackberry and Green Gables royalty, and has a long, level topline. She is also super sweet in temperament. She is mid-sized. This pairing linebreeds on our favorite Green Gables forbearers. We would like to retain a doeling from this pairing. Kids will be F7. UPDATE: They connected on October 27; unconfirmed due date is 3/24. Dancer delivered by herself, flawlessly, as a FF and her udder is lovely! Buckling/doeling twins; the girl will be retained.

Hurlburt Farms Grand Duchess and Green Gables AC Amazing Asteroid *B

Duchess is a pretty girl, with a ton of personality. She has complementary genes to many animals in our herd, but brings in new strains as well. Based on her parentage, we are looking for a great udder and lots of milk. Add to these, Mazy has a long, level topline and great breed character with with a super nose and long ears. Both Duchess and Mazy have remained small, so we hope for kids who will serve those who are looking to reduce their animals sizes. Kids will be F5. UPDATE: They connected on October 13; unconfirmed due date is 3/11/24. Duchess delivered one large buckling, who is available as a wether.

Storybook’s Sweet Lilac and Green Gables AC Amazing Asteroid *B

I have loved Lilac since she was born. Her roaning is lovely, and her overall look is very feminine. And those ears! She is also polled. She is the daughter of JC’s Bluebelle 3*P, who has one of our barn’s best udders. She is also very resistant to HOT worms. Mazy is relatively new to us, but his milk heritage is, well, amazing! Roaning and polled kids will be possible. Kids will be F6. UPDATE: They connected on October 25; unconfirmed due date is 3/26/24. Lilac kept us waiting two days, but delivered 2 doelings and a buckling. Dahlia is polled and retained. Dogwood and Mountain Laurel will definitely be available. Dogwood is sold.

Storybook’s Mayflower and Mosaic’s Mahogany Obsidian *B

Mayflower (Lilac’s littermate sister) is another retained daughter of of JC’s Bluebelle 3*P, who has one of our barn’s best udders. We are excited to see what this FF girl’s udder will be! She has lovely, “very dairy” overall conformation, and beautiful long ears. Chocolate and black kids are possible, along with heavy roaning. Kids will be F6. UPDATE: They connected on October 13; unconfirmed due date is 3/11/24. She delivered a single buckling on 3/13.

Storybook’s Valentine and Green Gables AC Amazing Asteroid *B

Valentine is very dear to us for the sake of her mother. Though a bit darker in color (more red gold) than her dam, Hurlburt’s Buttercup 2*P, she is still her mini me, and full of personality. Buttercup has had to retire in 2023 due to a mouth injury, so we are very grateful to have Valentine, and are looking forward to freshening her for the first time. Chocolate colors are possible. Kids will be F6. UPDATE: They connected on October 8; unconfirmed due date is 3/6. She had a very difficult breach delivery, but had one doeling on her due date, 3/6.
